In an emergency, always dial 911.

For any medical emergency, always call 9-1-1.  When MetCom or Bloomington Communications receives your call, the computer-aided dispatch system immediately begins to track your location and what responders the dispatcher needs to send for your care.

When you call, remain calm and be prepared to answer the following questions before you hang up:

  • The location of the victim -- if in a rural part of the community, be prepared to give detailed instructions on how to get to the victim.
  • Your name and the phone number you are calling from -- this information is important if for any reason we need more information about the victim's location or condition.
  • The nature of the emergency -- chest pain, shortness of breath, seizure, etc.
  • The victim's current condition -- conscious? breathing?
    1. The dispatcher may keep you on the line in order to provide you with detailed instructions on what you can do before the ambulance arrives. Be patient and let the dispatcher hang up the phone first!
